What is an intrauterine insemination (IUI)?

It consists of depositing a sperm sample, using a thin catheter, directly into the uterus. The semen sample is pre-treated before being deposited in the uterus to increase the total amount of viable, fertile sperm.

The sperm sample can come from the spouse or from a donor. If it is the spouse's sperm, it is collected on the day of the insemination, usually by masturbation. It must be taken to the laboratory within an hour for processing and insemination.

Ovarian stimulation is often combined with intrauterine insemination to promote the development of one or two follicles. Ultrasound and hormonal monitoring (through blood tests) will allow the stimulation to be controlled and the day of insemination to be determined.

The fertilization is done according to the natural process, the spermatozoa will go up the tubes to meet the egg.

The use of this medically assisted reproduction technique is recommended in cases of pregnancy failure despite ovulation, anovulatory cycle despite ovarian stimulation treatments, endometriosis, severe to moderate male infertility and unexplained infertility.

How does intrauterine insemination works in Mexico?

The woman's ovulation is optimized thanks to an ovarian stimulation treatment (daily injections of gonadotropins from the 2nd or 3rd day of the menstrual cycle). The growth of the follicles is monitored by hormonal measurements and ovarian ultrasounds (an average of 2 to 3 controls per cycle). When the size of one or two follicles is deemed optimal, ovulation is triggered by an intramuscular injection of hCG.

The chances of fertilization are greatest if fertile sperm are present in the fallopian tube 36 hours after this hCG injection, so IUI should be performed at this time after the sperm has been prepared in the laboratory.

The injection of hCG is done on average around the 11th day of the cycle, i.e. after 8 to 9 days of treatment to stimulate ovulation.

IUI is a faster and simpler and cheaper procedure than in vitro fertilization or surrogacy in Mexico.

Preparation of the semen

Sperm is most frequently collected by masturbation. Sexual abstinence is recommended for 2 days before insemination, but should not exceed 5 days.

It is possible to use donor sperm straws in cases where the couple's partner suffers from azoospermia (absence of sperm in the ejaculated semen) or a very significant alteration in sperm quality.

In vitro treatment (in the laboratory) of ejaculated sperm has several objectives, including selecting the most mobile spermatozoa, improving sperm mobility, and preparing the spermatozoa through a series of washes and centrifugations. Understand that it is absolutely possible to freeze your eggs in Mexico for a future procedure if needed. This procedure takes an average of 1h30 to 2h. After that, insemination can be performed.
